This is a HDR shot of 3 seperate exposures; although I'm really happy with the final effect, these were all taken hand-held, so there's some alignment issues, particularly to the left of the plough (I think!) which Photomatix hasn't been able to resolve. Lesson learned: Always use a tripod!

Still good enough to post though, particularly with all the post-processing I did; along with the tone-mapping, I think I used 3 curve layers, 2 level layers, a conversion to LAB and some playing with the colour channels to get what I wanted!

As always, comments are welcome, particularly those offering feedback and criticism on my images! (It's the only way I'll learn!) :)

The colors are great and the clouds are incredibly dramatic. I see what you mean about the alignment, but I'm not sure I would hae noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out. Overall it's a really well HDR.

@willow: Thanks Willow

james mason from nottingham, United Kingdom

wow very dramatic. another way to shoot hdr is to take a single raw image then make 3 copys in photoshop each with a different exposure. Useful if there is not tripod to hand

@james mason: I thought about that, but I would've either lost alott of sky or alot of shadow detail, depending on what exposure I used! Thanks for the comment

Erik from Amersfoort, Netherlands

Cool shot I just think the red is a bit to much red.....

@Erik: Thanks for the feedback Erik, you may be right, I think it looks better with more rather than less though!

Lorraine from Canada

Fantastic industrial shot, love the machine and the moody sky, well done, I think you're a wee bit of a perfectionnist, I prefer Moods to Techniques and you've got both so listen to my foot ;)

@Lorraine: No point trying unless you try your best, little things like that annoy me cos it's only after you get in and the moments passed that you spot them! Ears are wide open for the wisdom of your foot!

Graham Russon from Cape Town, South Africa

Nice shot, and slightly blurry has a cool effect.

@Graham Russon: Thanks Graham, although the blur annoys me!

Observing from West Cheshire, United Kingdom

It's a very good image Dave, but as stated the left is a bit off. I've used the method that James suggested, and that does really enhance the image.

26 Aug 2008 4:46pm

@Observing: I've used it as well, but for this one, the sky was well off, I felt I would've lost most of the highlights without bracketed shots.

Catalin from Bucharest, Romania

A very good shot but I think that the red si over satureted, over all is a great shot

@Catalin: Thanks Catalin, I like the red but I see where you're coming from!
