Mountainous #4

Posted by DaveB (Exeter, United Kingdom) on 23 October 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

More HDR work from the Scottish Highlands; this is Buachailla Etive Mor, the same mountain as yesterday (Thanks Alun!)

I'm also wondering, does anyone know of any free / extremely cheap monitor calibration software? I'm finding these shots are alot darker on my work screen compared to my laptop, and would like to see if I can rectify this!

As always, comments are welcome, particularly those offering feedback and criticism on my images! (It's the only way I'll learn!) :)

These really are superb pieces of work.

Dave, you can't compare an lcd to a ctr screen, and I would say that the monitor would give a truer picture. I don't know of any software, but you can adjust your settings using the well known B&W calibration strip image. Do you have it..? On my monitor your images look fine, with a full tonal range from highlights to dark clouds. I am very critical about light levels, so that's a plus for you.

23 Oct 2008 2:59pm

@Observing: My work computer is an LCD, so it's not an issue there Mike. I think my laptop just needs to be dialled down a touch. I know there are sensors you can buy which attach to your monitor and adjust your settings via USB, but I don't want to shell out £100 quid for one of these! They both look ok on either machine, just darker on the lcd monitor. I know the B&W strip you're talking about, I'll have to hunt it out again! Thanks for the feedback Mike!

p.s: Your laptop is probably showing a brighter than normal image, so adjusting this to what you believe is right will result in a too dark image on the crt.

@Observing: It's all very complicated, I'm sure I'll get it sorted out!

Richard_Irwin from Belper, United Kingdom

Super image, brilliant HDR. With the monitor calibration, your going to struggle to get both the same truthfully, and calling in the specialists in will cost you a bomb. You could choose one of those magic eye type calibration devices, but is the cost really worth it. Your best bet is to put both monitors side by side and use software calibration (Adobe Gamma for instance) to adjust the screens to a close match.

23 Oct 2008 6:44pm

@Richard_Irwin: Thanks Richard. I know what you mean about the eye gizmos, it's not worth it at my level, and it's not the colours that're off , just the brightness. More of an annoyance than anything else! Thanks for your comment!

Graham Russon from Cape Town, South Africa

Stunning shot, the clouds in this one are awesome. This current series would look incredible blown up poster size, framed and hanging in a gallery. Nice work.

This is a fantastic HDR image and by that I mean that it´s not over processed. It´s easy to get carried away when doing HDR. And a big thank you for your comments on my work! /Peter
