Any filter used here, Dave ? It suddenly reminds me of using a deep red filter back in my film days for this kinda stuff and getting dark, contrasty skies much like you have in the water here..

@Ronnie 2¢: I wouldve used a circular polariser while out. After that, I think I just played with curves til I got the effect I wanted!

I love this image, Dave...especially in black and white. All those textures against the smooth sky is really nice. It almost looks metallic.
