Be Like Water

Posted by DaveB (Exeter, United Kingdom) on 9 April 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

This image is a personal favourite for a number of reasons:

1. Shot using completely manual settings, just so I could test myself.
2. Pretty much as-shot, with the exception of the viginette.
3. It reminds me of this image, one of the ones that inspired me to get into photography, although it's not half as good.

I've another few of this guy which I may well play around with later

As always, comments are welcome, particularly those offering feedback and criticism on my images! (It's the only way I'll learn!) :)

Mike from Lichfield, United Kingdom

Nice shot Dave. Makes me wonder what he's thinking. He's probably looking at the lack of swell and seciding not to bother taking his surf board out.

9 Apr 2009 9:30am

@Mike: I think he was actually watching his kid surf, but I'm not sure

zOOm from Paris, France

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

You chose well for this one. The DOF is perfect-just enough so that we know what is going on, but not so much that your main subject gets lost in the rest of the photo. The exposure is excellent- It give a nice mood to the entire scene! Fantastic!

@Tracy: Thanks Tracy

Diane Schuller from Hythe, Canada

I actually prefer this by far to the one at Chromasia. Much more natural and real without a sense it may have been staged (as the one at Chromasia certainly appears to be). The soft tones you captured matches the mood of this young man. Your exposure was right on.

9 Apr 2009 2:42pm

@Diane Schuller: Wow, a favourable comparison to Dave Nightingale, I love you forever! :)

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Yes indeed it's a pleasant shot. He gazes in contemplation at the sea and we can feel there the osmosis of an human being with nature...

@Evelyne Dubos: Thanks Evelyne

Ronnie 2¢ from London, United Kingdom

Well, the Chromasia one is exceptional because it is kinda freaky but yours is something we can all relate to . . the guy standing there seeming to hope just the isolation will help him sort whatever is on his mind. Great human stuff.

@Ronnie 2¢: Thanks Ronnie

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

nice study of contempation & solitude...a great shot. While I am a fan of Chromasia as well, your guy is more sympathetic to the scenery, more casual and so I prefer our shot.
